- The City of Trenton is run by a 4-member board of city commissioners. Each commissioner has a different area that they are in charge of; the police commissioner, fire & utilities commissioner, street commissioner, and parks & animal control commissioner.
- The Fire & Utilities Commissioner is responsible for the fire department and for local utilities such as water and sewer.
- Commissioners are elected two 4-year, staggered terms, with two commissioners up for election every other year. Elections are nonpartisan.
