Clarence has a bachelor of science in geography and a master's in environmental science from Jacksonville State University He is an eighth-generation Georgian and a Paulding County resident.

Shawn is from Blakely, Georgia. He has bachelor's degree in Agribusiness from Tuskegee University, a master's degree in Strategic Studies from the Army War College, and a master's in educational leadership from Grand Valley State University. Shawn runs a grass-fed cattle farm. He is a retired Brigadier General with the United States Army, having served for 40 years including as an infantry commander in Afghanistan. He was also the Chief of Staff to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Kosovo. Prior to joining the Army, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He previously taught middle school and was a principal in Michigan public schools.
