- The Secretary of State is the Head of the Department of the State.
- The Secretary of State is responsible for managing much of the record keeping for the state, including managing mortgages belonging to the State and distributing statutes and legislative journals annually.

- The Superintendent of Public Instruction is secretary and chief administrative officer of the State Board of Education. They oversee the public school systems of the state.
- The Superintendent of Public Instruction, along with the State Board of Education, make up the leadership of the Department of Public Instruction, which is responsible for implementing the state's public school laws for pre-K through 12th-grade public schools. 
- The Department of Public Instruction administers annual state and federal public school funds. They administer $11 billion and license about 117,000 teachers and administrators who serve public schools.
- The Superintendent makes sure local school systems run effectively. They appoint a local superintendent to serve on the State Board and advise on local issues.

- The Treasurer is the State’s chief financial officer, officer banker, and a member of the Council of State. They are chiefly in charge of making sure the state remains in good financial health.
- The Treasurer manages NC’s pension and healthcare plans. The North Carolina Retirement System is a division of the Department of State Treasurer, which administers the pensions of state and local employees.

- The North Carolina Supreme Court is like the US Supreme Court. They have jurisdiction to review the appeal of any decision of lower courts, whether on the matter of law or legal inference. The NC Supreme Court typically only hears matters related to state law.
- The NC Supreme Court consists of 7 judges, called Justices. There is one Chief Justice and six Associate Justices. They are the final authority on the North Carolina Constitution. 
- Supreme Court Justices are the final court for appeals in North Carolina. Decisions they make on state law are final. During an appeal, the Supreme Court is primarily tasked with considering whether an error occurred at trial or in judicial interpretation of the law.
- Supreme Court Associate Justices decide cases as a group, much like the US Supreme Court. 
- Supreme Court Justices are elected for eight year terms and races are partisan.
