- District Attorneys (DAs) are elected officials responsible for prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the public within their respective counties. ​
- DAs oversee criminal investigations, determine charges, present cases in court, and negotiate plea deals. ​
- In New York City, each borough has its own DA, elected to four-year terms with no term limits. ​
- To run for DA, a candidate must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, a resident of the county they wish to serve, a registered voter, and appropriately licensed to practice law in New York.

- The New York Civil Court has jurisdiction over civil cases involving amounts up to $50,000 and other civil matters referred to it by the Supreme Court.
- It includes a small claims part for informal dispositions of matters not exceeding $10,000 and a housing part for landlord-tenant matters and housing code violations.
- There are 120 judges elected to the Civil Court, but only about 50 sit in it. The remaining judges sit in other courts, such as the Criminal Court or Family Court.
- Judges are elected to 10-year terms in partisan elections.
- They are paid a salary of $216,400.

Civil Court Judge

- The  New York Supreme Court is the state-wide trial court with the broadest jurisdiction in criminal and civil matters. However, it is not the state’s court of last resort.
- It can hear virtually any type of case brought before it, except for claims brought against the state which must be heard by the Court of Claims. Generally, it hears high-level criminal cases or civil cases with a judgment of more than $50,000.
- It is the only court that can grant divorce, annulment, and separation in New York.
- The New York Supreme Court is broken into 12 judicial districts state-wide. There are currently 154 justices authorized to sit in the New York City Supreme Court, but only 136 actually serve in Supreme Court trial parts because some of the justices are assigned to the Appellate Division or the Appellate Term.
- Justices of the Supreme Court are elected to serve 14-year terms and are paid a salary of $232,600.

- The Public Advocate serves as a non-voting member of the New York City Council with the authority to introduce and co-sponsor legislation. 
- The Public Advocate is elected to a four-year term, may serve up to two consecutive terms, and is voted on citywide.
- The Public Advocate's salary is $184,800 per year.
- The Public Advocate is first in line to succeed the mayor in case of a vacancy or incapacity.
