Jim has lived in Alpharetta for nearly 20 years. He has a bachelor's degree in finance from Georgia Southern University. He lives with his wife, Mary Anne, in the Windward subdivision. They have two children and attend Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church.

Jim Gilvin is currently the mayor of Alpharetta. He was first elected in a special election in 2018 and has been in office for one and a quarter terms. He used to be a member of the Alpharetta city council, where he was elected in 2011.

Supports preserving green spaces and improving recreational facilities and programs.

As mayor, he helped pass the 2016 parks and greenspace bond, which led to the city buying more than 30 acres of park space and resulted in the Willis Park Pool renovation.

Promises to complete "the final phase of connecting Alpharetta's Greenway with Forsyth County for a total of more than 20 miles, expanding the Alpha Loop through the west side of town eventually connecting to the Greenway and activating the recently acquired passive park spaces to make them easily accessible to residents."
