Lela is a Phoenix native who attended Adams/Grace Court Elementary and Phoenix Union High School. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona and her master's from Arizona State University. 

Lela is a former teacher who worked in the Phoenix Union High School District.

Lela Alston is currently a state senator for District 5. She was elected in 2022 and is serving her first term. Lela was a state senator serving District 24 for 2 terms from 2019 to 2023. Before that, she served as a state representative for District 24 for 3 terms from 2013 to 2019. She also served as a state representative for District 15 for 1 term from 2011 to 2013. Lela served in the Arizona State Senate from 1977 to 1995 non-consecutively. 

Lela was elected to the Phoenix Union High School District (PUHSD) Governing Board in 2008.
