James is a resident of Georgia, who earned a Bachelor's Degree from Georgia Southern University and a Juris Doctorate from Florida Coastal School of Law. He is a member of Indian Mound Baptist Church. James is married to Misty Thrift Burchett, and together they have two sons, Brodie and Beau.

James is a partner at Burchett & Kemp LLP, a law firm in Waycross, GA, and is also the owner of J.D. Burchett Law. He co-owns The Burchett Company. Previously, he served Ware County as the Chief Building Inspector for 10 years.
