Russel has spent his entire life in Cascade County, Montana. He graduated from Montana State University with a degree in agricultural production. He was recognized as Rookie Legislator of the Year for the 68th legislative session in 2023.  Russ and his wife, Lorie are active members of the Stockett Community Bible Chapel, where Russ serves as a trustee. They have 2 children, 4 grandchildren, and are certified foster parents.

Russel has worked for agricultural supply companies in various roles, including sales and management positions at Montana Pump & Irrigation, Ag Management Services, ConAgra/UAP, and Wilbur Ellis Company.
