Donavon attended Butte High School and Montana Tech. He has served on the executive board of the Montana State Democratic Party. 

Donavon has worked with organizations such as SEIU, the Montana Organizing Project, the Praxis Project, the Alliance for a Just Society, and the Center for Community Change. He has been involved in advocating for health care access, Medicaid expansion, and other critical issues.
