John's professional experience includes working for the U.S. Forest Service as a smokejumper and working as a writer and a public utility regulator. He is also the chief executive officer at AC Self Storage Solutions, and the co-owner and advisor of DeFeet International. He served in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard.

Troy Downing is currently  the Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, State Auditor. He assumed office on January 4, 2021 and is serving his first term. He previoulst ran for U.S. Senate Montana in 2018 but did not win.
