The county sheriff is responsible for:
- Preserving the peace and suppressing attempts to breach this peace such as riots and insurrections
- Executing arrest warrants
- Managing the county jail and detention center (unless it is operated by a private property)
- Supervising and overseeing search and rescue parties
In Montana, county sheriffs are elected for four year terms
