Robert earned his undergraduate degree from the University of the South-Sewanee, Tennessee. He received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife Debbie are active members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. They have three grown children, Ross, Wesley, and Kathryn, a daughter-in-law, Kariann; and a granddaughter, Frances.  Their dogs Belle and Enzo complete the family.
