Charles is a lifelong resident of Columbus County and attended Acme-Delco High School. He has a bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences from Shaw University. 

Charles is the pastor of First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church in Armour. He previously owned a trucking business called CHJ Trucking, worked as a substitute teacher in Columbus County Schools, as a workforce development specialist in New Hanover County Schools, and at the DuPont plant in Navassa.

Emily resides in Riegelwood with her husband and daughter. She is a Christian. She is the founder and president of the East Columbus Education Foundation.
