Cheryl is from Gastonia. She previously attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she played on the women's basketball team. She also attended the FBI National Academy. 

Cheryl currently works as a life coach a Executive Coaching LLC and at Legacy Event Center. She owns 2 local businesses, Smith’s Soul Food Bistro and Legacy Event Center. She is a former head basketball coach at the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities and a former assistant coach at the University of Alabama and North Carolina State University.

She has a bachelors degree in liberal studies and elementary education from Belmont Abbey College and a masters degree in human resource development from Clemson University. Janna and her husband have twin boys. She volunteers on the Camp Horizon Committee of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte, as a Guardian Ad Litem of Gaston County, a board member of Queen City Power Connections, and as a board member of the Providence Plantation Home Owners Association.
