Randy is originally from Lenior. He earned his associate's degree in emergency preparedness technology and emergency management from Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. Church and his wife, Jill, live in Lenior and attend Abington Road Baptist Church, where Randy is a pastor.

Randy most recently worked as a bailiff and deputy sheriff for the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office. He previously worked as the fire chief for the City of Lenior Fire Department.
