Karen graduated from The Kent School, then earned her bachelor's degree in English from Georgetown University and her law degree from the University of Buckingham School of Law. She has 4 sons.

Karen previously worked on the admissions committee of the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Karen Howard is currently a Chatham County Commissioner. She was elected in 2014 and is serving her third term. She was elected as chair of the board in 2019 and still serves in that capacity. She also served on the Chatham County Board of education from 2012 to 2014, and was chair of the board in 2013.
