Hardin attended North Wilkes High School. He graduated with an associate's degree in applied science degree in diesel and heavy equipment technology from Wilkes Community College and a bachelor’s degree in professional and technical education from Eastern New Mexico University. He is a a member of Little Elkin Baptist Church.

Hardin is retired. He worked at the Wilkes County Garage and taught in the WCC Applied Career Technology Division.
