Tony grew up in rural North Carolina, and lives on Knotts Island. He is married and has a son and daughter. He coaches a non-profit wrestling club, and is actively involved with the Knotts Island Ruritan club as a vice president and president for 2 terms.

Tony has worked for the Department of Defense for most of his career in various roles, such as a contractor and civil servant. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
