Gary is from Halifax County and attended Southeast Halifax High School. He earned his bachelor's degree and his master's degree in English from East Carolina University and his law degree from the University of the District of Columbia.

Gary currently works as a farm owner and an English instructor at Halifax Community College. He previously worked as an English professor.
