Preston is from Kinston, where he still lives. He is a pastor at the JT Kerr Memorial MB Church. He graduated from Adkin Senior High school, then studied education and administration at East Carolina University, and theology at the Liberty Theological Seminary and Graduate School. Preston is married.

Preston is currently retired. He was previously a teacher and administrator for Lenoir County Public Schools. He is also a moderator at the Trent River Oakey Grove Missionary Baptist Association.
