George is from Mecklenburg County. He holds an associate's degree in correctional science from Central Piedmont Community College, a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of North Carolina, and a master's degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He attends Saint Paul Baptist Church, where is a Deacon Emeritus. 

George previously worked as a police officer, a drug abuse resistance education (DARE) instructor, and a school resources officer at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

George Dunlap currently serves as a  Mecklenburg County Commissioner. He was elected to this position in 2008 and is serving his eighth term. He previously served as a member of the Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board of Education in District 3. He served in that position for 3 terms. He serves as a North Carolina (NC) Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commissioner and as chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee. He previously served as a chairman of the Justice and Public Safety Committee of the National Association of County Officials (NACO.
