Sarah graduated from Statesville High School. She then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Campbell University Law School. 

Sarah has been a prosecutor for over 20 years. She worked as an assistant district attorney from 1997 to 2009.

Sarah Kirkman is the current District Attorney for the counties of Alexander and Iredell. She was elected in 2008 and is serving her fourth term.
