Corey currently serves as a Major in the US Army Reserve. He previously worked as an assistant district attorney in Districts 25, 29A, and 41. and as an attorney at his own law practice, MacKinnon Law, PLLC. Corey J. MacKinnon currently serves as a district court judge in District 29A. He was elected to this position in 2020 and is serving his first term. He ran for district court judge in District 29A in 2018, but he did not win. He previously served as chairman of the McDowell County Republican Party.

As a Major in the US Army Reserves, MacKinnon joined the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the US Army, where he served as a legal assistant attorney and special assistant US attorney.

- District Court judges hear civil, criminal, and juvenile cases. Civil cases dealing with divorce, child custody, and child support are heard in District Court. 
- Under the District Court, the magistrate can try small claims cases ($10,000 or less), landlord eviction cases, and suits for recovery of personal property. A magistrate is an independent judicial officer, recognized by the North Carolina Constitution as an officer of the district court. 
- District Court Judges are elected for a four-year term. Elections are partisan.
