Patrick was born and raised in Polk County, NC. He received a bachelor's degree from Western Carolina University and a master's degree from Gardner Webb University. He is married to Kim Alewine and has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. He serves as the Polk County Historical Association president and attends the First Baptist Church of Landrum.

Patrick is currently retired. He previously taught high school math for 32 years.
