Carey is originally from Hendersonville, North Carolina. He earned his bachelor's degree in architectural construction from Clemson University. He lives with his wife, Lutrelle, in Laurel Park. They have 4 children and 4 grandchildren.

Carey is the owner of Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He previously worked as a general contractor before retiring in 2005.

Carey O'Cain currently serves as Mayor for the Town of Laurel Park. He was first elected in 2011 and is serving his third term. He previously served 1 term as a Laurel Town Council Member from 2009 to 2011.
