John holds a bachelor's degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy and a second bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. 

John served as a Captain in the US Coast Guard for 29 years. He previously worked as a facility manager with the Association of Plant Engineers and as a manager of the electric board division at General Dynamics.
