Leonard grew up in Saluda, South Carolina. He graduated high school in 1987 and attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He and his late wife Patrinia Blye have three adult children.

Mike is an alumnus of Duke University and a member of the Simon Temple AME Zion Church. He has worked with the NAACP, North Carolina Democratic party, and on his church's Steward Board and Lay Council ministries.

Mike is a licensed funeral service professional with over 20 years of experience, serving families at Colvin Funeral Homes and Paye Memorial Funeral Establishment in North Carolina. He has also worked as a political advisor, political strategist, and policy advisor to various elected officials and professional organizations.
