Dudley holds an associate's degree in criminal justice and corrections from Maryland Community College. He is married to his wife, Allyson, with whom he has two children and one grandchild. 

Dudley is retired. He previously worked as a jail captain and detective for the McDowell County Sheriff's Office, a Chief Deputy and Deputy for the Avery County Sheriff's Office, and the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement agency.
