Alma holds both a bachelor's degree and master's degree in art education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and earned a doctorate degree in art education and multicultural education from The Ohio State University. She has 2 children.

Alma S. Adams currently serves as a  U.S. Representative in Congressional District 12. She was elected to this position in 2014 and is serving her fifth term. She previously served as a state representative in District 12. She was elected to that position in 1994 and served for 10 terms. She previously served as a member of the Greensboro City Council. She was named to that position in 1987 and served for 2 terms. She also served as a member of the Greensboro City School Board. She co-founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus and the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus.
