Nigel received a bachelor's degree from John Jay College. He is married with two children and is an ordained Deacon at the Livingston Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Additionally, he is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for New Horizons Life and Family Services, the Richmond County Local Reentry Council, the Community Centers Coalition of Richmond County, and the Ashley Chapel Community Organization Center.

Nigel is currently retired from the New York City Police Department where he worked as a detective. He has also worked for the State of North Carolina Department of Adult Correction as a Probation/Parole Officer and as a Chief of Probation/Parole for Anson County for six years.
