Wendy Hazelton sworn in as district court judge

Wendy, the youngest of 14 children, was born and grew up in a rural area outside Windsor, North Carolina. She received both her Bachelors and JD from N.C. Central University in Durham. 

Wendy is currently a District Court Judge in Judicial District 3. She previously worked in Washington, D.C., for the Federal Election Commission and later went to Miami, where she worked at the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Wendy Smallwood Hazelton is the first African-American district court judge in Pitt County. She was first appointed in 2017.

Wendy Smallwood Hazelton

- District Court judges hear civil, criminal, and juvenile cases. Civil cases dealing with divorce, child custody, and child support are heard in District Court. 
- Under the District Court, the magistrate can try small claims cases ($10,000 or less), landlord eviction cases, and suits for recovery of personal property. A magistrate is an independent judicial officer, recognized by the North Carolina Constitution as an officer of the district court. 
- District Court Judges are elected for a four-year term. Elections are partisan.
