Erik was born in Bushwick, Brooklyn. He earned an associate's degree in business administration from St. John's University. He lives in Cypress Hills with his wife and their 3 children.

Prior to elected office, Dilan served on Community School Board #32 and Brooklyn's Community Board #4.

Erik Martin Dilan is an assemblymember in State Assembly District 54. He was first elected in 2015 and is serving his 4th term. He previously served for 12 years in the New York City Council, where he chaired the Housing & Building Committee.
