Edward was born and raised in East Harlem. He earned a GED and his associate’s degree in business administration from Cayuga Community College. He currently volunteers as a Democratic district leader. He has also founded and run the East Harlem Democratic Club, the Making At-Risk Children Happy, and Harlem Clergy United for Change. 

Edward has served as a political organizer for federal, state, and local Democratic campaigns. He also worked as a driver for criminal defense attorney Murray Richman. 

Edward Gibbs is an assemblymember in State Assembly District 68 and is the first formerly incarcerated person to be elected to the state legislature. He was elected in 2022 and is serving his first term.
