How this impacts you
School Curriculum — In 2023, Governor Burgum vetoed legislation funding a school voucher system, which would’ve enabled parents to use public funds to enroll their children in schools beyond their local options, including private schools.
Public Safety — In disaster events, including wildfires, the governor can declare a state of emergency. This activates the North Dakota National Guard, and puts the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services and the North Dakota Forest Service on high alert, as was the case in 2024 to combat wildfires.
