How this impacts you
Criminal Justice — The Coroner is responsible for determining if a body should be autopsied, or if a toxicology report should be completed. These tests can determine the body's cause of death, and can be used in courts of law as evidence in murder trials and several other court cases. These pieces of evidence often serve as important factors in the conviction or acquittal of someone on trial for a crime.
Public Health — The Coroner is responsible for releasing a body's remains after examination. This affects the timing of any post-death ceremonies that the family may want to carry out, including cremation, spreading ashes, or holding a funeral.
