Alex Wan is from Atlanta, Georgia. He has a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a master of business administration in finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He lives with his family in the Morningside neighborhood. He is an active member of the Morningside Lenox Park Neighborhood Association.

Alex is the assistant vice president for community affairs at Emory University. He previously served as the executive director of Horizons Atlanta, the director of development and alumni relations at Emory University, and the development director at Jerusalem House. Earlier in his career, he owned a small engineering firm.

Alex is currently a member of the Atlanta City Council, representing District 6. He was first elected in 2010 and is currently serving his third term. He previously served two four-year terms before running for Atlanta City Council president. He was re-elected to the District 6 seat in 2021 and will continue serving on the City Council while recusing himself from any votes that would directly impact Emory.
