Matt Westmoreland is from Atlanta, Georgia. He has a bachelor's degree in history from Princeton University. He is a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. He lives in Midtown.

Matt is a teacher and program director. He taught history at Carver Early College High School and served as program director for the educational nonprofit Horizons Atlanta. He also worked for the Atlanta Regional Commission, the D.C. Public Schools System, and in the D.C. office of U.S. Rep. John Lewis.

Matt is currently a member of the Atlanta City Council, representing At-large Post 2. He assumed office in 2018 and is currently serving his third term. He previously held the District 3 seat on the Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education from 2014 to 2018.
