Gale A. Brewer - The New York City Council

Gale Brewer is from New York City. She has a master\u2019s degree in public administration from Harvard\u2019s Kennedy School of Government and did her undergraduate work at Columbia University and Bennington College. She lives with her husband Cal Snyder and they have a grown son.

Gale is a professor. She taught at CUNY and Barnard College for many years. She also worked on a research project regarding non-profits at the CUNY Graduate Center. Before her elected office, she served as Chief of Staff to Council Member Ruth Messinger, NYC Deputy Public Advocate, Director of the city’s Federal Office, and Executive Director of the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women. She worked for a private firm that focused on creating affordable housing.

Gale is currently a New York City Council Member representing District 6. She was sworn in and appointed to the council on January 3, 2022. Prior to her current term, she served as Manhattan Borough President from 2014 to 2021 and represented the 6th Council District from 2002 to 2013. She previously served as Chief of Staff to Council Member Ruth Messinger, NYC Deputy Public Advocate, Director of the city%E2%80%99s Federal Office, and Executive Director of the Mayor%E2%80%99s Commission on the Status of Women. She stood for election for City Council in 2001, for Manhattan Borough President in 2013, and again for City Council in 2021, but did not win.

As a city council member, passed legislation to establish composting facilities in city parks.

Supports "real arts education in every school."

Supports all shelters for homeless and asylum families, but prefers affordable housing over shelters in some cases.

Opposes rent increases and supports affordable housing.

Supports changing the penal system toward a restorative rather than a retributive model of justice.
