James attended West Valley High School, Heartland Baptist Bible College and Veritas Baptist College. He and his wife have three children, who attend West Valley Schools.

James is lead pastor at Highland Community Church. He used to be the operations director of West Side Church and a part owner and operator of HEC Landscape Construction.

James Kephart's campaign for school district director is his first entry into politics. He is endorsed by the Yakima County Republican Party.
