Gary is from Helena, but currently lives in Colstrip with his wife. He graduated from Helena Senior High School, then earned his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Montana and his MBA from Sam Houston State University. 

Gary is currently retired, but previously worked as a senior contract analyst at Texas Westmoreland Coal and the Western Energy Company.
