O.D. graduated from Northampton County High School West, and studied at Saint Paul's College. He is married to his wife, Kristy, with whom he has a daughter. O.D. is a member of the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Garysburg. He is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the vice president of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.
