James is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is married to Deanna and has three children. James recieved his bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from North Carolina Central University. 

James is a partner and publisher of the Winston-Salem Chronicle Newspaper and For Seniors Only! Magazine.

James Taylor, Jr. is currently a council member in Winston-Salem City Council, Southeast Ward. He has been a Council Member since 2009. He is the Chair of the Public Safety Committee.
