Douglas Sheets currently serves as a member of the Rutherfordton Town Council. He was elected to this position in 2019 and is serving his first term. He serves as president of the Rutherford County Medical Society. He is a former president of the North Carolina Medical Society.

Douglas is a retired physician. He previously worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist (OB/GYN) both in private practice and at Rutherford Hospital.

Douglas holds a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency training at Bayfront Medical Center, specializing in Family practice and in obstetrics and gynecology. He lives in Rutherfordton. He is married to his wife, Kay, with whom he has 3 children and 3 grandchildren. Their family attends Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church, where he is an elder.
