Carol is originally from Houston. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Houston. She lives in the Idylwood neighborhood of Houston's East End and attends St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.

Carol currently works as the principal for Girasol Consulting, LLC. She previously worked as a senior executive assistant to Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown, as a legislative assistant to Congressman Gene Green, and as a consultant in economic and community development in East End neighborhoods.

Carol Alvarado currently serves as the state senator for Texas District 6. She was first elected to this position in 2018 and is seeking reelection for her 4th term.
