Suzan earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Reed College and a master's in business administration from the University of Washington. She and her husband Kurt have 2 children. 

Suzan previously worked at Microsoft, most recently as a corporate vice president. She also helped start drugstore.com as its original vice president of marketing and store development and served as CEO and president of Nimble Technology. Additionally, she was appointed as the director of the Washington State Department of Revenue in 2010.
