Sonny Proctor is from East Point, Georgia. He has a bachelor's degree in biology from Wake Forest University and a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He and his wife, Karen, have lived in Jasper since 1995 and have a son, Folsom.

Sonny is a retired orthopedic surgeon and healthcare executive. He practiced at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital until his retirement in 2010. After retiring from clinical practice, he served as Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital until 2014. Earlier in his career, he helped run a family-owned business called Proctor Forest Products, which brokered lumber, moldings, and millwork.

Sonny is currently a member of the Jasper City Council. He was first elected in 2017 and is currently serving his second full term.
