He filed for the seat on July 16, 2025, but dropped out on August 14, 2025, after the Cumberland Board of Elections determined that he had pleaded guilty to a felony in South Carolina. Murillo maintains that he is not a felon and believes he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. He has not held public office before.
