Tyler Smothers has a bachelor's degree in business finance from the University of North Texas and a master's degree in educational leadership from Texas A&M Commerce. He lives with his wife, Dr. Stephanie Smothers, and their two children in Sunnyvale. He is an active member of c|Life church.

Tyler is a small business owner. He previously worked as a teacher and coach in the Sunnyvale Independent School District (SISD) and served as a firefighter in Dallas.
